Supporting somone

How to look after someone who has experienced abuse

It sounds obvious but it is not. Some people might say, ‘just get over it’. But it’s not that simple.

The main things to remember when supporting someone are;

i. Do let the person you are supporting talk to you in confidence if they need to.

ii. Don’t pressure the person you are supporting to talk.

iii. Help the person you are supporting to search out other sources of local support.

iv. Try to establish if the person you are supporting may be in danger. If you feel the person may be in danger, talk to the person directly and offer support in seeking help.

v. Don’t be afraid to seek out support for yourself. It is not easy to always know the best course of action. Start with ‘getting help‘ section to talk to someone who can guide you.
